Laulima (Teamwork) – Many Hands Make Light Work

The Maui fires have had a devastating impact – physically, emotionally, and financially – on the entire state of Hawaii. Our island neighbors are going through an unprecedented situation and we feel it is our calling to help.

Maui Humane Society has rescued over 200 feral cats from the devastated streets of Lahaina. These cats are unsocialized and are not available for adoption. They have no home. Nowhere to go. As part of the tri-island Maui County, we felt LCS has a responsibility to kokua (help) with the Lahaina situation

Because we specialize in turning homeless cats into socialized, adoptable kitties, we have already taken in 70 Lahaina cats (be sure to watch our video at the bottom of this page) and will be bringing in 150 more throughout the next couple of months. All of our supplies are barged in from Honolulu. With only 3,000 people on our island, one gas station, and no traffic lights, our resources are limited. Inflation is at an all time high so the lifelong cost of care fo these cats will be considerable, but we are dedicated to creating a safe haven for them for life.

Nearly all of the cats adopted from the Sanctuary each year are taken home by visitors. Prior to the Lahaina fires, we had over 100 people a day visiting our sanctuary and donating. Ever since the fire, donations are down considerably and we have less than 10 people a day visiting us. Maui Humane will be working with us to find homes for our adoptable cats to allow room for the ferals. We believe that every cat deserves to live the best life possible, and though we provide an amazing journey for them, we know that nothing is better than a warm lap and a loving home.

We hope you will join us in this endeavor and help us reach our goal.

In order to create a safe haven for more cats, we have set a goal to raise $200,000 by the end of 2023! Together, members of our Lion's Den Hui have pledged $100,000 to offer as a matching gift – your donation will be matched up to $100,000!

The best way to help us is to set up a recurring monthly donation at the top of this page. Whether it's $25 a month or $50, this sustained giving is crucial to helping us plan and budget for the year to come.

For less than $1 a day you can "Adopt in Place" one of our current Lanai Lions or sponsor the care of one of the Lahaina cats. When you adopt a cat in place, you give the gift of a life-long home, high-quality care including doctor's visits, and everything needed for health and happiness. Sponsorship also makes a great gift!
