Holiday Matching Gift Challenge

Meet Duncan who we rescued 12 years ago. We rescued Duncan and his three brothers from a landfill on Lanai. They were such tiny kittens at 4 weeks-old. Their mother had abandoned them to make it on their own - an impossible fate for kittens without skills to survive. They faced a painful death of starvation as so many kittens face on the street.

We brought them in to our care at our temporary sanctuary, an abandoned horse corral in the Lanai uplands. All four brothers had painful eye infections that required daily medicine and a lot of work. One did not survive. One was adopted. And two of the brothers - Duncan and Seal - have remained with us ever since.

Duncan and Seal are in their twilight years with us - a time in life that we all face if we are blessed with the gift of time. Duncan still has problems with his eyes as well as ongoing challenges with his upper respiratory system. He is frequently on medication and is monitored closely by our veterinary team. These days he enjoys the simple pleasures of sanctuary: an enduring love for treats and cuddles; quiet moments in any willing lap so that he can feel the warmth of touch, and is fine just to purr the day away with the sun on his belly. Our veterinarian, Dr. Ako, visits twice a month from Honolulu to monitor him closely and our staff gives Duncan the love he needs every day.

Senior cats need a lot more TLC and geriatric care requires a great deal of diligence and expertise to really know what these Baby Boomers need. Our job is to make him as comfortable as possible in our care and to watch over him to ensure that every ache and pain, every cold and illness - is treated swiftly and compassionately. We keep our eye on Duncan and hope that you will too. He is just one of nearly 600 cats in our care that all have special needs. We have a lot of elderly cats and with your gift, we can ensure the highest quality of care for those in our protection.

Maddy and Doug Callahan love Duncan and Seal and all the felines who followed in their footsteps to Lanai Cat Sanctuary. In memory of former board member Dave Theno who passed away this year on Lanai, the Callahans will match any gift dollar-for-dollar as long as it's received by December 31.
